Balaton Átúszás is one of the largest open water swimming competitions in the world and one of the World’s Top 100 Open Water Swims. The 5.2 km event in Lake Balaton is held on 7 July 2012 from the port of Révfülöp to the Platan beach establishment in Balatonboglár. With over 7,000 participants, there are continuous starts from 8 am – 2 pm.
A mandatory medical exam is required to participate. Every 20-30 meters, safety personnel on boats guarantee the safety of the competitors. Swimmers return to the start in Révfülöp from the finish in Balatonboglár by ferry boat.
The 1 km race is from a floating pontoon near Treasure Island to Beachcomber Island. The 2.7 km swim is at Beachcomber Island and starts on a sandbar. The 18 km solo swim and relay is from Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa to Beachcomber Island. The 18 km race can be done solo, with 2 swimmers or with 5 swimmers.
