Around the world, the podium places at major open water swimming competitions are usually dominated by 20-somethings, 30-somethings and sometimes even 40-somethings. The combination of strength and savvy, speed and stamina in young mature adults are simply too much for teenagers to overcome.

But not at this year’s Swim Miami races where the younger generation dominated the top 10 finishers in the Miami Mile, 5 km and 10 km events.

But, of course, there were all kinds of stand-out performances by those old enough to be retired. 61-year-old Catherine Rust from West Palm Beach, Florida finished the 10 km marathon swim in 2:43:26.3 while 60-year-old Carlos Humberto Ramirez Barcen finished in 2:47:28.9 and Steve Burns from Pleasant Hill, Missouri finished in 3:27:52.7. Ricardo Valdivia also hung tough with swimmers less than half his age in the 5 km race.
